Welcome to Montego Bay, mon! Here, loafers are replaced with sandals, happy hour is every hour and great food is never hard to find. Jamaica’s cuisine is packed with flavors and draws influence from the indigenous people from the island, as well as from the Spanish, Irish, British, Africans, Indians, and Chinese who have lived here. No matter how you prefer to satisfy your cravings, you won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to sample the authentic flavors Jamaica is celebrated for.
Sure, you could just walk down the Hip Strip and stop at any restaurant and be wowed by the food. There aren’t really any bad places to eat here – so you’ll want to try a taste of everything. Here are a few of our favorite places just a hop, skip and a jump from our hotel.
Right on the Hip Strip and a short walk from our hotel, Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville offers both America and authentic Caribbean cuisine, but be ready for some fun while you dine. The place boasts a 120-foot water slide and a water trampoline where you can soak up the excitement. The slide and trampoline are closed at night (safety first), but the restaurant really comes to life after the sun goes down.
Enjoy a few cocktails, sample all 52 tropical-flavored margaritas or try their signature 22-ounce beer bongs before cutting a rug on the patio dancefloor. The place will be filled with people, dancing, drinking and having the time of their lives on any night of the week at Margaritaville.
No need to take a car, just a quick walk from our hotel to get to Tracks & Records located right next door. Savor authentic Jamaican cooking at this truly unique restaurant created and owned by famous Olympic champion Usain Bolt. Start your dining experience with the Red Peas Soup before trying Jerk Pork (made with their very own jerk seasoning and a favorite of Bolt’s) for your entrée. Try one of their delectable desserts such as the Heavenly Bread Pudding Surprise or the Jamaican Ice Cream Sundae.
Are you a sports fan? Well then, you’re going to love the huge TVs that span the entire length of the bar. Catch a game while munching on some of the best food on the island. Take to the roof for live music or a DJ pumping the island’s biggest hits offering even more fun. Oh, and don’t forget to take a selfie in front of the Usain Bolt statue, which is almost entirely made of bolts; it’s so cool and very Instagram worthy.
The Pelican Grill has been a Montego Bay staple since 1964, so you’re pretty much morally obligated to stop here. The historic restaurant features Jamaican home-style dishes in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Just grab a cover-up and toss on your shoes. Open all day, the eatery invites you to devour vibrant omelets with fresh produce or savor the jerk chicken, Indian curries, Caribbean fish, lobster, chowders and vegetarian dishes. Soothe your sweet tooth at the soda fountain, which also offers milkshakes, banana splits, and other treats. This place will have you wanting to come back again and again.
The restaurant is also just a short walk from our hotel and is located right on the Hip Strip. Enjoy the views of the sea and treat a date or a group of friends to a real taste of Jamaican cuisine. Dance until the wee hours of the morning and have stories to tell for a lifetime.
You’ll have to make reservations and spend a little more here, but the food is more than worth it. Pier 1 is a unique open-air, fine dining experience. Serving dishes only for lunch and dinner, the restaurant has a large menu specializing in fresh seafood, jerk chicken, jerk sausage pastas, curry goat, oxtail and beef tenderloin. From picky to adventurous, there is something for every appetite to enjoy.
No restaurant on the island would be complete without some delicious drinks. Sip on an inventive cocktail, a bold pale ale or a smooth wine while checking out those amazing Caribbean views. And don’t forget about dessert! We recommend the chocolate mousse or classic cheesecake.
