Avoid the Suitcase Swell with our Ultimate Jamaica Packing List

You’ve been considering a sunny, tropical vacation for a while, and you’ve finally made plans for your getaway. With its incredible weather, unique history and international culture, Jamaica makes the top of your list, and you can’t wait to get your toes in the sand.

But you don’t even know where to begin with packing. Don’t stress. We’ve created a list of all the essentials you’ll need while living your best life in Jamaica.

The greatest thing about packing for a Jamaican vacation is that the weather is phenomenal all year-round. No matter when you visit, temperatures will range from the mid-70s to high 80s. While May, October, and November are considered the rainy months, it only lasts for a short while until the sun comes out again with plenty of things to do during this time.

Get Packing

First, you’ll want to figure out how many days and nights you’ll be staying on the island. A good rule of thumb is to pack a casual outfit for the daytime and a nicer outfit for the evening. Pack one to two outfits per day, and toss in an extra one or two for incidentals.

Select Your Attire

Though you’ll mostly be loading up your suitcase with items for the beach, you’ll also want to have a decent selection of dressy resort wear options. When you’re not sunbathing or hitting the waves, you won’t want to be walking around Montego Bay in your cover-up the whole time. Plan ahead and make sure you put your best foot forward when you’re roaming the island. And even if you’re not visiting Jamaica during the rainy season, it’s a good idea to bring an umbrella or raincoat just in case.

For women, you’ll want to pack swimsuits, cover-ups, sundresses, shorts, tank tops and flip flops for activities during the day. For evenings, you might want to pack closed-toe shoes and a few nicer dresses or pants if you plan on going to some of the more upscale restaurants on the island.

For men, you’ll want to stick with swimsuits, an assortment of tank tops and tee shirts, plus shorts and sandals for the daytime. Nicer button-down shirts, linen pants, and loafers are great options for evening attire.

Most of the resorts and hotels in Montego Bay are near golf courses, such as the White Witch Golf Course, so don’t forget to pack some tee-time attire if you plan on hitting the green.

Protect Your Skin

Whether relaxing on the beach, lounging by the pool or enjoying all the water sports Jamaica has to offer, protecting your skin is essential. Pack two different kinds of sunscreen; one for your face and the other for the rest of your body. You’ll also want to consider an SPF lip balm. Even with coverage, you may still get a little red while out on the waves, so don’t forget the aloe!

Did we mention bug spray? Yes, mosquitos can still be found in paradise, especially when venturing out for some water exploration in the nearby rainforests at top attractions such as Dunn’s River Falls and Park. So bring along a secret weapon to avoid having itchy skin during your trip.

Medical Needs

If you take medication, whether over-the-counter or prescription, pack just enough for the trip. For prescriptions, it’s best to keep them in their own bottle, labeled with the same name that’s listed on your ID.

Travel Essentials

Don’t forget to pack your travel wallet with your current ID and passport, airline tickets, hotel reservations and any other travel documents you may need. If that sounds like a lot to keep track of, download a travel app to keep everything in one place.

If you like to travel in VIP style, you should consider using Club Mobay an airport arrival and departure service. You’ll need to plan way ahead – these services tend to sell out for the year – but you’ll enjoy a VIP meet and greet the second your plane lands. You can also enjoy access to an exclusive arrivals lounge and experience fast-track privileges through customs. You’ll appreciate the time you save which means more fun in paradise!

Optional Equipment

If you love taking pictures during your vacation, make sure you have enough space in your luggage for your camera and any equipment, such as a tripod, you might want to use with it. You may also want to bring along a GoPro so you can take action shots and videos while you’re sliding down the 120-foot slide at Margaritaville or jumping on the ocean trampoline at Doctor’s Cave Beach.

Checklist

While placing everything in your luggage, create a checklist of all the items you’re bringing with you. This is a great way to keep track of things during your vacation, and packing up will be a lot less stressful because you’ll be able to check everything off your list. Without worrying about leaving anything back at the hotel, you can relax a little more on your journey home.

When considering to pack your own toiletries, remember that most hotels such as S Hotel Jamaica provide travel-sized toiletries including shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion, so you can save a little room in your suitcase for other essentials.
